Frequencies of HbS obtained by several screening clinics are analyzed for age, sex, and location effects. All seem to be present in some form, though age and sex effects may be conditional on location. An attempt is made to elaborate the common observation of increasing frequency with age. This is shown to be the result of differences in fertility favoring the normal. A simulation which íncludes 25% admixture was done. The results indicate a genetically relevant New World experience for the population to be about 9–12 generations with the heterozygote having fitness of 0.96–0.99. 相似文献

A method is described for the preservation of iodopsin, the labile photopigment of daylight vision, by freeze drying in vacuo. The lipids released by the action of light on rhodopsin and iodopsin are found to be similar and to possess a labile absorption spectrum in chloroform, with a rising peak at about 390 mµ and a declining peak in the region of 470 mµ. Taxonomic confusion exists in several sibling species groups. The Polyommatus coridon species complex (Chalk Hill Blues) serves as a model group of sibling species in which genetic analyses provide suitable means for taxonomic clarification. We studied the allozyme patterns of the two described bivoltine species of this complex, Polyommatus hispana and Polyommatus slovacus, and compared them to the two genetic lineages of the univoltine P. coridon. P. hispana is well distinguished from P. coridon (genetic distance: 0.081), and most probably is a sibling species that has evolved during glacial isolation on the Iberian Peninsula. P. slovacus is genetically indistinguishable from the eastern, Pontic–Mediterranean lineage of P. coridon; therefore we suggest that it represents a local bivoltine population only. Since the spring generation of P. slovacus was much less common than the summer generation and showed less genetic diversity, it is probable that uni-/bivoltinism is a dimorphism affecting only part of the whole population. We suggest that the higher genetic diversity of the second generation may be a consequence of gene flow from adjacent single-brooded populations. 相似文献

Delayed luminescence (DL), also termed delayed fluorescence or delayed light emission, is the phenomenon of long-lived light emission by plants and cyanobacteria after being illuminated with light and put into darkness. Culture growth of three Prorocentrum minimum strains was studied with DL measurements. DL decay kinetics was measured from 1–60 s after a pulse of white light. The strains used were from the Adriatic Sea (PmK), from Chesapeake Bay, USA (D5), and from the Baltic Sea (BAL), cultured at salinity of 32, 16, and 8 (practical salinity scale), respectively. The strains differed in cell size and chlorophyll a content (PmK > D5 > BAL), as well as in DL parameters. The DL results were compared to standard measurements of culture density and carbon content (calculated from biovolumes). DL decay curves had a specific peak, which changed with culture growth and showed more similarities between the strains PmK and D5. The DL intensity increased with cell density and carbon content in a two-stage process, corresponding to the lag and exponential phases of growth. DL intensity was best correlated with carbon content irrespective of strain and is proposed as an estimate of biomass and for differentiating between lag and exponential phases of growth. 相似文献

Methanobacterium sp. Mb1, a hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaeon, was isolated from a rural biogas plant producing methane-rich biogas from maize silage and cattle manure in Germany. Here we report the complete genome sequence of the novel methanogenic isolate Methanobacterium sp. Mb1 harboring a 2,029,766 bp circular chromosome featuring a GC content of 39.74%. The genome encodes two rRNA operons, 41 tRNA genes and 2021 coding sequences and represents the smallest genome currently known within the genus Methanobacterium. 相似文献
